    Students from Puget Sound University (Washington state, USA) visited Suan Mokkh for a few days. Their professor asked Tan Ajahn Buddhadāsa to clarify the difficult to grasp teaching of not-self and how rebirth could be possible if selflessness is fundamental. This is a question often asked by foreign visitors. Tan Ajahn spoke in Thai and Santikaro Bhikkhu interpreted into English live.     'The Art of Living' A talk given by Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu to international meditators on 4th September 1990 at Suan Mokkh, Chaiya, southern Thailand, as translated from the Thai by Santikaro Bhikkhu. In the late 1980s and early 90s, until his health deteriorated too much, Ven. Ajahn Buddhadāsa gave regular lectures during the international retreats held at Suan Mokkh and then Suan Mokkh International. As these were given at the end of his life, they often focus on core concerns of Buddha-Dhamma. Tan Ajahn spoke in Thai and Santikaro Bhikkhu interpreted into English live.

    About Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu:
    Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (Servant of the Buddha) went forth as a bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) in 1926, at the age of twenty. After a few years of study in Bangkok, which convinced him 'purity is not to be found in the big city,' he was inspired to live close with nature in order to investigate the Buddha-Dhamma. Thus, he established Suan Mokkhabalarama (The Grove of the Power of Liberation) in 1932, near his hometown of Pum Riang (now in Chaiya District). At that time, it was the only forest Dhamma Center and one of the few places dedicated to vipassana meditation in Southern Thailand. Word of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, his work, and Suan Mokkh spread over the years so that they are easily described as 'one of the most influential events of Buddhist history in Siam.' Here, we can only mention some of the most interesting services he has rendered Buddhism. Ajahn Buddhadasa worked painstakingly to establish and explain the correct and essential principles of what he called 'pristine Buddhism,' that is, the original realization of the Lord Buddha before it was buried under commentaries, ritualism, clerical politics, and the like. His work was based in extensive research of the Pali texts (Canon and commentary), especially of the Buddha's Discourses (Sutta Pitaka), followed by personal experiment and practice with these teachings. Then he taught whatever he could say truly quenches dukkha (dissatisfaction, suffering). His goal was to produce a complete set of references for present and future research and practice. His approach was always scientific, straight-forward, and practical. Although his formal education only went as far as ninth grade and beginning Pali studies, he was given five Honorary Doctorates by Thai universities. His books, both written and transcribed from talks, fill a room at the National Library and influence all serious Thai Buddhists in Siam. Doctoral dissertations are still being written about him and his legacy. His books can be found in bookstores around the country and are favorites as gifts at cremations. Progressive elements in Thai society, especially the young, were inspired by his teaching and selfless example. Since the 1960's, activists and thinkers in areas such as education, ecology, social welfare, and rural development have drawn upon his teaching and advice. Most of the monks involved in nature conservation and community development were inspired by him. He provided the link between the scriptural tradition and engaged buddhist practice today. After the founding of Suan Mokkh, he studied all schools of Buddhism, as well as the other major religious traditions. This interest was practical rather than scholarly. He sought to unite all genuinely religious people in order to work together to help, as he put it, 'drag humanity out from under the power of materialism.' This broadmindedness won him friends and students from around the world, including Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs. His last project was to establish an International Dhamma Hermitage. This addition to Suan Mokkh was intended to provide facilities for: - Courses which introduce foreigners to the correct understanding of Buddhist principles and practice; - Meetings among Buddhists from around the world to establish and agree upon the 'heart of Buddhism'; - Meetings of leaders from all religions for the sake of making mutual good understanding and cooperating to drag the world out from under the tyranny of materialism. - He left instruction for the building of Dhamma-Mata, a residential facility to support the dedicated study-practice of women.
    Ajahn Buddhadasa died in 1993 after a series of heart attacks and strokes that he kept bouncing back from in order to teach. The final stroke occurred as he was preparing notes for a talk to be given on his birthday in two days (27 May). Suan Mokkh carries on in the hearts and actions of all those who have been inspired and guided by his example and words. Suan Mokkh is not so much a physical place as it is the space of liberation that we all must discover in this very life.

    Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu states that the ‘new life’ is in fact very ancient, and the life of dukkha, of stress and suffering, is much newer. In this talk he provides an outline of the new way of life and the pitfalls to avoid. He explains that the problems – dukkha – are like waves of the ocean that arise and pass away, but the ocean is always there. When the waves have passed away there is peace and coolness. If we can remove feelings of ego and self, and positive and negative, from our lives, then there won’t be any more of these waves, there won’t be any more dukkha. He then goes into detail on how concepts and feelings and beliefs in ‘ego’ and ‘self’ are just illusions. This Dhamma teaching was offered by Tan Ajahn on 7th February 1989.     In a continuation of the previous talk “New Life,” Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu reminds us that once we have really seen the old life clearly for what it is, then we are able to deduce that there must be something else, and then we begin to look for that which is the opposite of old life. And this is where we begin to find the way of new life. He emphasizes the importance of Nibbāna as a sense of the goal of the new way of life, so that we can move more steadily and more directly in that direction. He explains how the new life that has atammayatā must use three fundamental tools which work to prevent the arising of dukkha: sati (mindfulness), paññā (intuitive wisdom), and samādhi (collectedness of mind). Lastly he also describes in detail the nine insights that we call paññā.

    Foreign-born monastic disciples of Venerable Ajahn Chah made a first group pilgrimage to Suan Mokkh to pay respects to Tan Ajahn Buddhadāsa, who was held in high esteem by Ajahn Chah. Tan Ajahn spoke with them about the Dhamma understanding he considered essential for deep practice (dependent co-arising) and the Buddha's most complete meditation system (mindfulness with breathing).     Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu points out that we must talk about Buddhism itself as the real art. Instead of looking at Buddha statues as art, he encourages us to take the meaning that is expressed on the face of those images, such as the qualities of joy, intelligence, love, and patience. He explains aspects of what we can call ‘the supreme life,’ the qualities or things we are looking for. He goes into detail with many examples on the fundamental essence of Buddhism, that there is no ‘self,’ no attā, and this is the art of Buddhist living. He points out that great harm that is done by ‘me’ and ‘mine’—that this world is being destroyed by selfishness—then he explains the way of removing selfishness.     Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu introduces a lesser-known word, Dhammika or Dharmika, which means to be made up with or made up through by Dhamma. He notes that we often don’t stop to notice whether this life is integrated with and through Dhamma, or ‘Dharmic life.’ It’s kind of hidden. He goes on to explain the four basic meanings of Dhamma and that Dhamma is about being correct, and Dhammika is this correctness in accordance with Dhamma. He further explains the meanings of Dhammika, which involve practicing correctly according to nature and living correctly towards and regarding nature.

    To further the understanding that there is no attā, no self, Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu explains in detail how dhātus are merely natural elements which are anattā (not-self). He notes that there are that two categories of dhātus—one with the characteristic of constant change and the other stable or immutable. He describes these in detail and reminds us that if we are successful in our study and understanding of paṭicca-samuppāda (dependent origination) and our investigation and practice of ānāpānasati (mindfulness with breathing), then we will have sufficient knowledge and ability to deal wisely and successfully with the dhātus. If we thoroughly understand the dhātus then there will not remain any more feelings or thoughts of attā (self), and then we won’t have any more problems in life.

    Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu reminds us that there isn’t anything which isn’t a dhātu, and elaborates on certain dhātus that we need to study and get to know in particular. He explains each of the six elements that compose the human being: the physical—earth, water, fire, and wind elements; the non-physical—consciousness element; and the neither physical nor nonphysical—space element. Next he details the very important stage where the six dhātus combine into the five khandhas, the five aggregates. We use the five khandhas to understand life—if we know the five khandhas are anattā, then positiveness and negativeness will have no more influence over our minds and then we will be free. This Dhamma teaching was offered by Tan Ajahn on 5th August 1991.
